Ralph Allen Massey, 60 Years of Art – The Influences

bG Gallery is pleased to present 60 Years of Art, a solo exhibition featuring the works of artist Ralph Allen Massey.

What are the influences? Finding influences is a sophisticated process involving studying the historical, social, and personal context related to the artists’ process. Artists are influenced by just about anything – their life, environment, childhood, school, work, television, movies, other artists, etc. Everything we see and experience in life influences our art in some way, whether directly or indirectly. Art gives us meaning and helps us understand our world. Scientific studies have proven that art appreciation improves our quality of life and makes us feel good. When we create art, we elevate our mood, strengthen our ability to solve problems and open our minds to new ideas.

Ralph Allen Massey’s work is loaded with the nostalgic playthings of his rich history. His influences range from the master Japanese woodblock artists of the 19th-Century to the art and illustrations of Norman Rockwell, the figurative drawings of Alberto Giacometti, and the Pop of Mel Ramos.

Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator. His works have a broad popular appeal in the United States to reflect the country’s culture. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life and culture he created for The Saturday Evening Post magazine over nearly five decades. Much like Rockwell–American visual artist Ralph Allen Massey, born in 1938, has been pushing the boundaries between popular and ‘high’ art for six decades and has exhibited his work throughout America. While blending popular imagery of sculpture, figurines, and lush paintings in an original composition pushing the edges of his paintings into shaped wall sculpture, Massey’s works manipulate and redefine the many familiar icons. Widely known for his tendency to juxtapose contemporary fine art with more comical and playful pieces, the artist has amassed signature appeal amongst popular culture lovers and art collectors alike.

The current show, 60 Years of Art, is an immersive experience into the ethos of Massey, celebrating his 60 years as a practicing artist.
