Armenian- American painter Arshile Gorky (1904-1948) was one of the greatest influences on the abstract expressionism movement in America. His subject matter draws on both his identity as an Armenian born American citizen and his experience living through the Armenian genocide in his teenage years before emigrating to the United States. Heavily influenced by Post Impressionism and largely self taught, he is regarded as one of the most significant painters of the 20th century.
