Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker during the Romantic period. Born to a lower-class family, he began his career as a court painter, creating portraits for the Spanish aristocracy and royalty. Working both in and out of court through political turmoil and war, his oeuvre chronicled and commented on the current events and circumstances of his time. Given the tribulations of his nation and of his personal life, his paintings are riddled with not only politics but emotion, leaving behind records of war-ridden Spain and explorations of the darkest corners of the human mind.
