bG Gallery, Ocean Park presents a solo exhibit of the latest work by artist Gay Summer Rick. “Skyways and Highways” is a series of color-rich works with a focus on air and land travel. The new series captures air flight above the horizon of the artist’s usual subject matter, iconic urban and coastal areas.
A longtime transplant to Los Angeles from New York, Gay Summer Rick’s work has been distinctive in finding beauty in the constantly developing city. Train routes, city centers, and freeways have met the artist’s touch and are reinterpreted as atmospheric energy. Recently, a new flight path above Los Angeles has diverted her gaze to the skies. Gay Summer developed a fascination with the passage of flight. This fascination led her to redirect recent air travel in order to revisit and study different airport locations.
The dynamic relationship between the two environments of airport and urban habitats and the coastline is heightened by the artist’s choice of using a palette knife instead of a brush. Her distinctive painting style creates an arresting color field in which the city’s sharp edges dissolve into the impressionistic embrace.
