Born in Boyle Heights in 1974, Mike Saijo was born to immigrant parents from Japan. He has always had a close connection to Boyle Heights and the culturally diverse community he calls home. His past work “Dream Deferred (2011)” was exhibited at BG Gallery (2011), Breed Street Shul (2012), ADL Artworks (2013), La Plaza de Cultura y Arts (2015), Japanese American National Museum (2017). The exhibition was inspired by Saijo’s research of the intersections of Mexican, Japanese, and Jewish communities in Boyle Heights during World War II.

Curator Deepa Subramanian is an Indian art gallerist and an entrepreneur based in Los Angeles, California, United States. Her chief curatorial goal of Saijo’s exhibit is to address the iconic quality of the ‘readymade’ and its evolving significance in current art practice by drawing parallels to historical events and to give it a physical human experience of time, space and structure.
