Joan Miró was a Spanish Catalan sculptor, ceramicist, and painter born in Barcelona. Miró was influenced by Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh’s work when he began exploring his artistic style. A few years after settling in Paris, he joined the Surrealists group and was one of the first artists to contribute to the development of automatic drawing. Soon after moving to Paris, he had a successful solo show at the Galerie Pierre, Paris in 1925. Miró had a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1940. In the mid-twentieth century, Miró was an important influence on the American Abstract Expressionists.
