bG Gallery is pleased to present Sprucification, the first U.S. solo exhibition by artist Martin Krammer. In his work for this exhibit, Krammer draws upon his experience as a furniture designer and a painter to create sculptural portraits with wood and watercolor. The exhibit’s title Sprucification references the Vienna Spruce, the type of wood Krammer uses for his work, commonly recognized as a “Christmas Tree”. The raw elements of the tree itself; bends of growth, knotty orifices, blunt protrusions,  the rings of its trunk, are incorporated into Krammer’s depictions of the human face, the nude body and fashionable women dressed in contemporary clothing. By juxtaposing the artifacts of a tree’s life against that of humans, Krammer invites a contemplation of time, transience and  the relationship between human society and the natural world.

Martin Krammer is an Austrian artist and industrial designer.
